For my mom’s birthday, I took her out for a special brunch at Max Brenner. We were originally planning on going to the one in Union Square, but ended up going to the other location in the East Village, which was definitely a smart decision! It was quaint, quiet, and intimate unlike the hectic Union Square location. When we arrived, there was only one other table occupied. It really was a relaxing, comforting atmosphere.
Both my mom and I already knew what we were going to order. I got the Tutti-Frutti Waffles which are described as “warm waffles topped with fresh strawberries and blueberries, served with bananas, vanilla ice cream, and a becker of warm melted chocolate sauce.” The presentation was beautiful, of course, and the taste was even better! The fruit on top of the waffles was nice and warm, and the chocolate sauce just made them over-the-top. Seriously guys, the chocolate sauce was absolutely heavenly. I didn’t eat the vanilla ice cream though, because I’ve never liked vanilla (chocolate girl!). What a fantastic, sweet brunch!
My mom ordered the Peanut Butter Crepe which is described as “a thin french crepe stuffed with melted chocolate chunks and peanut butter, served with vanilla ice cream, toffee bananas, and warm toffee caramel.” My mom absolutely loved her crepe, but how could you go wrong with a crepe full of melty chocolate and peanut butter?! And according to her, the peanut butter was good quality.. no Skippy in there, thankfully! My mom actually ate both hers and my little dish of ice cream. It’s her day, so a splurge is required!
After our meals, we both ordered a small cappuccino in one of their signature kangaroo cups which hold two small squares of dark chocolate. How decadent does that sound?! The cappuccino was absolutely delicious, and perfectly sweet with the melty chocolate. YUM!
We had such a great time, and really enjoyed our special brunch together. Now that I’m home, I’m totally exhausted, and I think I’ll just take it easy for the remainder of the day.. it’s brutally hot out there!

Long time lurker, first time poster! First) Love your blog so much, your approach to Veganism is realistic, admirable, and inspiring. Secondly) I’m a chocolate girl too! My boyfriend hates chocolate, so he doesn’t understand my obsession. Glad your mom enjoyed her birthday brunch. You look adorable with your mug… you actually look a lot like the model Ruby Aldridge (beauty who does a lot of Urban Outfitters/Nylon type work). Keep up the great work :)

I’ve been looking at your site for a little while now. I love seeing the meals you make, and even though I’m not vegan myself- they all look so tempting!
Anyway- when I read last night about this brunch, and clicked the link you posted for Max Brenner- I was MESMERIZED by their offerings.
I’m truly jealous of you for dining there!
But I’m glad you were able to enjoy yourself- despite the fact the cuisine is not vegan there.
Your meal looks completely delicious- it’s nice to splurge every now and then

Everytime I visit your blog I see another wonderful waffle and I’ve come to the realization that it’s about time I buy a new waffle maker. You’ve definitely tempted me with pictures long enough =p

SO glad u went with the tutti fruitti waffles…aren’t they sublime? I’ve tried a lot of stuff at Max Brennar including the chocolate “pizza”, chocolate filled bagel, smores, as well as their regular food but those are my fave…I esp. love the chocolate “syrup” they offer. Next time you should try the white chocolate…OMG…it’s so good. Now i’m craving a trip to max brennar :P

Nadia – the only reason I didn’t get the white chocolate chunks on top is because I actually really don’t like white chocolate!
